WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER THE TEST?
Positive
If your test results come back positive*, it means that
SARS-CoV-2 was detected in your sample. Notify your doctor of
your results and follow their instructions. Protect your loved ones by self-isolating, and
follow the latest guidelines
from the Ministry of Health. It is also important to notify the people you came into contact with because
they may need
to be tested as well.
Negative
If your test results come back negative, it means that SARS-CoV-2 was not
detected in your sample. Monitor your health,
and if you continue having COVID-19 symptoms speak to your doctor about retesting. It is
still important to protect
yourselves and others by following all precautionary measures issued by the Ministry of Health.

WHAT IS COVID-19?
COVID-19 (COrona VIrus Disease
19) is the
name for an infectious disease caused by a coronavirus called
SARS-CoV-2,
which first appeared in 2019. Human Coronaviruses (HCoVs) generally cause mild illnesses like common
cold but three
HCoVs can cause lethal illnesses — SARS-CoV which causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS),
MERS-CoV which causes
Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and SARS-CoV-2 which causes COVID-19.
HOW IS COVID-19 TRANSMITTED?
COVID-19 is mainly transmitted via droplets caused by coughing and sneezing by a person
who already has the
disease.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF
COVID-19?
COVID-19 produces symptoms very similar to influenza (seasonal flu). However, in a
small number of
patients who are at
high-risk due to older age or pre-existing conditions like asthma,
diabetes and heart disease,
COVID-19 can cause
respiratory failure and lead to death.
No, you do not have to show symptoms of COVID-19 to have the test. If you have come into
contact with a confirmed case, if you have travelled to a high-risk country, if you are
still working to provide essential services or even if you are just worried about your
health and want to be certain, you can have the Molecular RT-qPCR COVID-19 Test.
South Korea and the Italian town of Vò, have shown how mass testing can have a
significant effect in neutralizing and preventing the spread of COVID-191,2.
As many
people with COVID-19 may be asymptomatic, or present very mild symptoms, only testing
people who have come into contact with confirmed patients does not help control the
spread of COVID-19. Knowing who is affected by testing all suspected cases and people
that continue to work is critical to accurately, responsibly and effectively stop the
spread of the disease, protect our community and make sure that our healthcare systems
stay operational and functional.
Because it is possible to acquire COVID-19 from people who may present mild symptoms or
be asymptomatic, it is important to protect ourselves and others. The most effective way
to protect yourself is by social distancing, ie avoiding contact with other people. This
will also help to 'flatten the curve', that is lower the burden of COVID-19 that our
healthcare systems (doctors, nurses, medical equipment, hospital beds) will not be able
to cope with otherwise. Washing your hands with soap and water regularly or using hand
sanitizer if soap is not available, and regularly disinfecting surfaces that may harbor
the virus is also recommended. Each person’s reaction to the coronavirus is different,
and we have to protect ourselves and others.
Yes, one email address can be used for several patients if they belong to the same
family. The reports will clearly distinguish for which patient they are.
If the viral response in your organism isn’t high enough, which can happen in the first
days of the infection, the test can come back as negative. Unfortunately, this is a
biological limitation of the test.
In very rare occasions, the results are inconclusive due to biological or technical
reasons. Please inform your doctor to advice for repeating the test.
