The Molecular RT-qPCR COVID-19 Test is a molecular genetic test that uses Real-Time PCR (RT-qPCR) methodology for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 which causes COVID-19. The test is based on the guidelines published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the USA. The Molecular RT-qPCR COVID-19 Test checks for the viral RNA signature to confirm the presence of SARS-CoV-2.
There is evidence that people could acquire the disease from someone who is asymptomatic, or who only presents mild symptoms. It is vital that you get tested
Knowing who is affected, by testing all suspected cases and people that continue to work is critical to stop the spread of the disease, to protect our community and to make sure our healthcare systems stay operational.
We have designated sample collection points throughout Cyprus. Find your closest NIPD Genetics collection point here. Sample collection takes less than a minute and may be mildly uncomfortable.
*All positive results will be reported by NIPD Genetics to the Ministry of Health
COVID-19 (COrona VIrus Disease 19) is the name for an infectious disease caused by a coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2, which first appeared in 2019. Human Coronaviruses (HCoVs) generally cause mild illnesses like common cold but three HCoVs can cause lethal illnesses — SARS-CoV which causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), MERS-CoV which causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and SARS-CoV-2 which causes COVID-19.
COVID-19 is mainly transmitted via droplets caused by coughing and sneezing by a person who already has the disease.
COVID-19 produces symptoms very similar to influenza (seasonal flu). However, in a small number of patients who are at high-risk due to older age or pre-existing conditions like asthma, diabetes and heart disease, COVID-19 can cause respiratory failure and lead to death.
No, you do not have to show symptoms of COVID-19 to have the test. If you have come into contact with a confirmed case, if you have travelled to a high-risk country, if you are still working to provide essential services or even if you are just worried about your health and want to be certain, you can have the Molecular RT-qPCR COVID-19 Test.
The price of the COVID-19 test changes to €35(no VAT).
No, your results will not be affected.
South Korea and the Italian town of Vò, have shown how mass testing can have a significant effect in neutralizing and preventing the spread of COVID-191,2. As many people with COVID-19 may be asymptomatic, or present very mild symptoms, only testing people who have come into contact with confirmed patients does not help control the spread of COVID-19. Knowing who is affected by testing all suspected cases and people that continue to work is critical to accurately, responsibly and effectively stop the spread of the disease, protect our community and make sure that our healthcare systems stay operational and functional.
Because it is possible to acquire COVID-19 from people who may present mild symptoms or be asymptomatic, it is important to protect ourselves and others. The most effective way to protect yourself is by social distancing, ie avoiding contact with other people. This will also help to 'flatten the curve', that is lower the burden of COVID-19 that our healthcare systems (doctors, nurses, medical equipment, hospital beds) will not be able to cope with otherwise. Washing your hands with soap and water regularly or using hand sanitizer if soap is not available, and regularly disinfecting surfaces that may harbor the virus is also recommended. Each person’s reaction to the coronavirus is different, and we have to protect ourselves and others.
Your results will be reported via the email address you provided us with on your information form.
Yes, one email address can be used for several patients if they belong to the same family. The reports will clearly distinguish for which patient they are.
If the viral response in your organism isn’t high enough, which can happen in the first days of the infection, the test can come back as negative. Unfortunately, this is a biological limitation of the test.
In very rare occasions, the results are inconclusive due to biological or technical reasons. Please inform your doctor to advice for repeating the test.
Yes, you could. You could have come into contact with someone who is asymptomatic or someone who has mild symptoms and are unaware of them having the disease. If you have symptoms related to COVID-19 it is important you get tested.
