The NIPD Genetics respiratory pathogens test is a molecular, genetic test performed via RT-PCR methodology, that detects and differentiates between 22 respiratory pathogens such as bacteria and viruses, that cause acute respiratory infections. Some of the tested pathogens include viruses like SARS-CoV-2 and influenza, and bacteria like legionella and mycoplasma.

A respiratory infection is a disease that affects the sinuses, airways and lungs. They can be caused by a variety of pathogens, including bacteria and viruses. They can be categorized into upper respiratory infections, affecting the sinuses and throat, and lower respiratory infections affecting the airways and lungs. Respiratory infections are transmitted through air droplets (coughs and sneezes) from a person who is already infected, or from contaminated surfaces. Good hygiene measures, frequent handwashing, mask-wearing, social distancing and vaccination where applicable can help reduce the spread of respiratory infections. Onset and severity of symptoms depend on the pathogen and may manifest from 3 days to a few weeks after potential exposure. Symptoms include cough, runny nose, sneeze, fever, dyspnea, chest pain and myalgia. Cases can be asymptomatic, mild, moderate or severe. Treatment depends on the pathogen and the severity of illness, and can include home rest, antivirals, or ventilation-support for critical cases.

Accurate, fast and reliable identification of the respiratory infection can help in:

  • Early and efficient treatment for the specific bacteria or virus
  • Speedy recovery of the patient
  • Timely admission to hospital for treatment, if necessary
  • Limiting the spread of the infection to other people
  • Containing the spread of COVID-19 and limiting the effects of the pandemic

We will collect a nasopharyngeal sample

Samples are sent for testing to our accredited laboratory

You will receive your results within 72 hours

The test results will tell you whether you are positive or negative for any of the 22 pathogens tested. It is possible that you may be positive for more than one pathogen.

  • Proven track record of consistently accurate and fast results
  • Short turnaround time*
  • Convenient sample collection locations throughout Cyprus
  • Testing performed at NIPD Genetics’ state-of-the-art, CAP-accredited and CLIA certified laboratories
  • Advanced technology and robotic systems that reliably process hundreds of samples per day
  • Test has 97.3% sensitivity and 98.4% specificity.
*For emergency situations, results can be reported within 1-2 hours of sample receipt in the lab. Please contact our team for more information.

The NIPD Genetics Respiratory Pathogens test detects 22 bacteria and viruses (or their subtypes), including SARS-CoV-2 which causes the novel coronavirus. These respiratory infections may present with indistinguishable clinical signs and symptoms, so accurate testing is important for correct identification of the pathogen causing the infection and proper treatment.
